Basic three-step process:
Step 1 — Calculate volume in cubic feet:
Volume (ft³) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (ft)

Coverage runs both ways. If you already know the area of a pour and its thickness, convert square feet to cubic yards in one step:
Volume (yd³) = Area (ft²) × Thickness (ft) ÷ 27

Common Conversion Mistakes
A few errors cause most over- and under-orders. Watch for these before you call the plant:
- Not converting inches to feet. Thickness is quoted in inches; length and width in feet. Multiply 12 × 12 × 4 directly and you get a number 12× too big. Always divide thickness by 12 first.
- Confusing yd³ with yd². "10 yards" of concrete means 10 cubic yards (volume), not 10 square yards (area). The two are never interchangeable.
