How Do You Calculate Concrete for a Wall with Openings?
The concrete in a wall with doors and windows is the gross wall volume minus the volume of every opening, plus a 5–10% waste allowance. In one line:
Net concrete (yd³) = [ (L × H × T) − Σ(opening W × H × T) ] ÷ 27
All dimensions are in feet (convert thickness from inches by dividing by 12). The openings share the wall's thickness, so each one removes width × height × thickness of concrete.

Step 1 — Gross Wall Volume
Treat the wall as a solid rectangle first, ignoring openings:
Gross volume = Length × Height × Thickness
Example wall: 20 ft long, 8 ft tall, 8 inches thick.
- Thickness: 8 ÷ 12 = 0.667 ft
- Gross volume: 20 × 8 × 0.667 = 106.7 ft³
Step 2 — Subtract Each Opening
Every door and window is a rectangular void at the wall's full thickness. Compute each and total them.
Same wall, with one door and two windows:

Step 3 — Net Volume + Waste
Subtract the openings, then add waste for spillage and an uneven base:
- Net: 106.7 − 35.4 = 71.3 ft³
- Cubic yards: 71.3 ÷ 27 = 2.64 yd³
- Add 10% waste: 2.64 × 1.10 = 2.9 yd³ to order
So a wall that looks like it needs ~4 yards actually takes under 3 once the openings come out — which is exactly why skipping this step leads to costly over-ordering.

Things That Change the Number
- Lintels and sills. If openings are bridged by a separate poured lintel, that concrete is added back — don't double-count it as wall.

- Reinforcement. Steel doesn't change concrete volume meaningfully, but congested rebar around openings can trap air — vibrate well to avoid honeycombing.
- Waste factor. Use 5% on clean formwork, 10% as a default, and up to 15% on rough or sloping ground.

Do you subtract window and door openings when estimating concrete?
